Tax Liability of Disability Benefits

Posted by Don Levings

The tax liability of disability benefits is determined by who is making the payments. If you are a professional and your firm pays the premium for the disability policy, the tax liability is much different than if you were paying the premium yourself.

As Your Career Changes, So Should How You Protect Your Earnings

Posted by Don Levings

Professionals should review their disability insurance needs as their career changes.

If you've enacted a disability policy early in your career, it is wise to re-visit the amount of your policy if your income level has changed. If you're a doctor - it may have been early on in your practice. If you're an attorney, you may now be a partner. Scenarios like these have probably changed your income, which means you are most likely underinsured.

As I explain in this short video, re-evaluation to make sure your family is protected is a smart choice....

1980s = 300+ Disability Carriers, Today = Less than 35!

Posted by Don Levings

When I started in the disability insurance industry in the 1980's, there were more than 300 disability insurance carriers.  Today there are less than 35! This emphasizes the importance of the Quality of Carrier when choosing a disability insurance product.

Additionally, the definition of "Own Occupation" within your policy will protect what you do specifically as the main part of your bread-winning function.  For instance, if you are a surgeon, it protects your ability to perform surgery.

Four Overlooked Aspects of a Disability Insurance Policy

Posted by Don Levings

There are four key elements that are most often overlooked when it comes to putting together a disability insurance product for physicians and professionals.

  1. Mental and Nervous Disorders: what are the proper definitions the carrier should use
  2. Residual/Partial Benefits: If you were only restricted to work 1/2 days. you should get 1/2 day of benefits
  3. Cost of Living Rider
  4. Guaranteed Physical Insurability: If you are young, you want to make sure that you can be covered as you age if you need to make a change to your policy later in life.

As I explain further in this short video,  these four areas and more should be discussed when building a disability plan that will last you a lifetime.  Learn more in my quick video....

Group vs. Individual Disability Insurance

Posted by Don Levings

Group disability insurance is most often less expensive - but beware, the benefits are almost always less as well. If you rely solely on the group disability plan, you may be underinsured.

As I explain in this quick video, there is significance to being able to receive both the policy's benefits and also social security disability benefits. If you are in a Group policy, you only get the group policy benefits.  If you have an individual policy, you get both the monthly benefits of the individual policy PLUS the social security benefits you are entitled to.

The Role "Own Occupation" Plays in Disability Insurance for Physicians

Posted by Don Levings

The term "Own Occupation" is extremely important for physicians who have a main bread-winning aspect of their profession.

The example that I give in this short video is of an Orthopedic Surgeon. Not being able to perform surgery will significantly reduce income for this professional.
